As First Round FA Cup ties go, they don’t get much tastier than Blackpool v Morecambe. While, on paper, the tie might seem relatively unremarkable, it is given added spice by the fact that it is a Lancashire derby – the two teams are separated by just 19 miles of northern coastline and have a history as competitive rivals.
The tie will take place on Saturday the 9th of November at Blackpool’s Bloomfield Road. Both teams come into the game on the back of a mixed run of results. Blackpool have won just one their last five league games, but have lost only one too – they took six points from games against Peterborough, Burton Albion, Wycombe, Rotherham, and Bolton. Morecambe’s record is identical as they took six from there last five in the league, beating Leyton Orient and Colchester but suffering defeat against Stevenage, Forest Green and Bradford.
The Seasiders sit comfortably in 8th place in the League One
In terms of their respective league positions, however, it is Blackpool who are faring a great deal better than their coastal rivals. The Seasiders sit comfortably in 8th place in the League One table just one place outside the play-off places. Morecambe, on the other hand, are languishing at the very foot of the football league, 24th in League Two, having conceded 29 goals in just 17 games. The Shrimps are three points from safety at the time of writing.
While they may be close in terms of geography, they have rarely been close to each other in terms of their position in the Football League pyramid. As recently as 2011, Blackpool were a Premier League team after their remarkable promotion under Ian Holloway. After that, however, it has been very much downhill for Blackpool who struggled with mismanagement and asset stripping enacted by the Oyston owners. They spent four seasons in the Championship before being relegated to the third tier.
They were relegated again in the 2015/16 season, taking them to League Two for the first time in nearly 30 years. They have since regained promotion to League One and, with the Oystons gone, look to be on the right track. Morecambe’s existence over the past decade has been much steadier after gaining promotion from the Conference in 2007. They have played in League two for 12 successive seasons. The high point came in 2009/10 when they reached the play-offs but lost in the semi-finals.
In terms of their head-to-head record, Blackpool have faced off just four times in the past decade. They last came to blows when Blackpool pummelled Morecambe 5-1 in a Football League Trophy clash in 2019. Prior to that, they faced each other twice in League Two in the 2016/17 season, with each team winning one of the games. Before that, the pair’s most recent game came in 2012 when Morecambe squeezed past Blackpool 2-1 at Bloomfield Road.
