France face Moldova in the penultimate round of Euro 2020 Qualifiers in Group H on Thursday the 14th of November. The clash, taking place on French soil at the Stade De France, could hardly be more uneven. World Champions France are in second place in Group H by virtue of their inferior goal difference to 1st place Turkey.
Their record is very healthy; they’ve won six, drawn one and lost one of their opening eight games and have a fantastic goal difference of +16 during these games – they’ve scored 21 and conceded 5. Moldova, on the other hand, have already been eliminated and will not be competing at Euro 202. Their record, by contrast to France’s, is atrocious. They have won just once and lost seven times with an abysmal goal difference of -20, a tally which sees them rock-bottom of Group H, below even Andorra.
The two sides met on the first day of Euro 2020 qualifying when France beat Moldova with a 4-1 scoreline. Vladimir Ambros scored a late consolation goal after Antoine Griezmann, Rafael Varane, Olivier Giroud and Kylian Mbappe had all got on the scoresheet. Since then, the only victory Moldova could muster was a 1-0 victory at home to Andorra, one of the lowest FIFA ranked teams.
France will WIN this game
In all likelihood, France will win this game convincingly and their passage to Euro 2020 should be secure. After this fixture, they have one more game. It comes against Albania who, like Moldova and Andorra, have already been eliminated from Euro 2020.
The only team that could potentially catch France are Iceland who are four points behind them in 3rd place. For this four-point swing to come about, Iceland would need to take maximum points from their two remaining games (one of which comes against 1st place Turkey) and France would need drop points in both of their remaining games.
It seems, therefore, that France vs Moldova will be something of a glorified friendly. It might give France boss Didier Deschamps the opportunity to play some youngsters who otherwise might not get a game.
France is one of the favorites to win EURO 2020
France is one of the favorites to win the upcoming European Championships which will, for the very first time, be taking place across Europe rather than in one host country. Their World Cup success in 2018 has bolstered their hopes of an era of dominance. These hopes are by no means far-fetched, either.
France’s squad has an almost ludicrous amount of depth with a perfect mix of experienced players, like Hugo Lloris, Rafael Varane and Olivier Giroud, and exciting young talents, like Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele.
